(Baonghean.vn) - On Saturday, September 27, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced that Berlin will host an international conference to provide humanitarian relief to millions of Syrian refugees. The conference is scheduled for October 28.

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, the German Foreign Minister said Germany would do its part in this regard and that Steinmeier sincerely hoped that other countries would do the same. “The countries that are neighboring Syria are the ones that need the most support. They are doing a great job, even though they are also affected by the influx of refugees from Syria,” Steinmeier stressed.

More than a million Syrian refugees have sought asylum in Lebanon and 1.4 million in Jordan. Since a week of fighting between Kurdish forces and Islamic extremists, the flow of refugees has continued to pour into Turkey. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the number of Syrian refugees in the country had surpassed 160,000 as of September 26.

On Wednesday, September 24, at a United Nations meeting, King Abdullah II of Jordan complained that Jordan was not able to support the influx of refugees to the country. The King explained, “Up to this point, we have not been able to meet the needs of refugees from Syria. More efforts must be made to provide humanitarian assistance in Syria as well as to support neighboring countries that host Syrian refugees, including Jordan.”
