Korea - Vietnam International Workshop on Law of the Sea
Yesterday afternoon (October 29), at Yongsan University in Busan, the Korea-Vietnam International Conference on the Law of the Sea of Vietnam and Korea took place.
The workshop was co-organized by the Center for Maritime Law Studies under the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Yongsan University in collaboration with the Institute of Ocean Science and Technology under the Ministry of Land, Water and Ocean Resources of the Republic of Korea. Attendees included professors, researchers, scholars from research institutes and major universities in Vietnam and Korea, as well as many Korean students studying at Youngsan University.
Opening the workshop, Director of the Center for Maritime Law Studies (under Youngsan University) Jang Seong-ki emphasized that recently, due to sovereignty disputes between a number of countries in the region, including Korea and Vietnam, the issue of maritime law has been attracting special attention from the public and international scholars. In that context, organizing a workshop on this topic is a good opportunity for scholars, researchers of the two countries and international friends to learn more about the Law of the Sea of Korea and Vietnam. The workshop is also an opportunity for scholars of the two countries to present historical and practical legal bases that contribute significantly to resolving issues related to maritime disputes, ensuring peace and stability in the region.
In his speech at the workshop, Professor, Dr. Vo Khanh Vinh of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences presented an overview of the basic contents of the Vietnam Sea Law, and emphasized that the Vietnam Sea Law clearly defines Vietnam's indisputable sovereignty over seas and islands, and this is the basis for Vietnam to apply to resolve territorial disputes with related countries in the spirit of respecting international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The basic principle of the Vietnam Sea Law is to create a high legal basis for determining the scope and legal regime of Vietnam's sea areas in order to protect national sovereignty, jurisdiction, territorial integrity, security, order, socio-economic development, expand international relations in Vietnam's sea areas, and create a peaceful and stable environment in the region.
The opinions of Korean researchers at the workshop all agreed that the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea is the most important multilateral legal document in the United Nations system of specialized documents.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea represents the similarity of views of countries in different maritime zones on the basis of taking into account the interests of all countries, and this is an important legal basis for maritime countries such as Korea, Vietnam and other countries to affirm their sovereignty and jurisdiction, in accordance with international conventions, and is also an authentic basis for delimiting overlapping maritime zones for countries with adjacent and opposite maritime zones.
Previously, the Law of the Sea of Vietnam was also discussed by Vietnamese and Korean scholars and researchers at the International Conference on “Law, Culture and History in East Asia” held on October 26 at the Institute of Law Research of the Korean University of Foreign Studies./.
