Workshop on dam safety in Nghe An
(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of February 3, 2015, in Vinh City, the University of Water Resources, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An and the Vietnam-New Zealand Project Management Board on Dam Safety and the Downstream Area co-chaired a workshop on dam safety in the downstream area. Attending the workshop were representatives of the Board of Directors of the University of Water Resources, the Vietnam-New Zealand Project Management Board, and leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the three provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa.
Also attending the workshop were representatives of irrigation companies and district agricultural departments, which are the agencies managing and operating dams in Nghe An province.

At the workshop, the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An briefly mentioned the situation of dams and reservoirs, the recent floods in Nghe An that have affected people's lives, thereby highly appreciating the purpose and significance of the workshop and the project for Nghe An.

Project experts from New Zealand introduced their experience in managing, operating and evaluating dams in their country to share their experiences. Through the publication of images of natural disasters caused by flood caused by dam failures in the world and in the country, and the situation of landslides and dam failures in Nghe An, experts from the University of Water Resources analyzed the causes, harms and consequences of unsafe dams and their impact on downstream areas. In addition, after surveying some dams in the area such as Khe Lau dam in Thai Hoa town, Ban Mong reservoir (Quy Hop), experts analyzed and clarified some details to ensure safety when storing water as well as operating and handling when there are natural disasters and floods.

Through discussion and exchange, experts from the University of Water Resources provided some information, the causes of dam breaks causing damage in the provinces and the survey results of the Institute of Geophysics to give warnings. Although Vietnam in general and Nghe An in particular have not suffered major damage due to unsafe dam reservoirs, the process of handling dam operations in case of a situation is very necessary./.
