The moon will move to its closest point to Earth in its orbit when the lunar eclipse occurs on the first day of the new week.

On June 4, exactly one day before the full moon, the moon will reach perigee – its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. At that point, the moon will be 358,482 km (222,000 miles) from Earth. As a result, the moon’s disk will appear slightly larger than it did when viewed onother times of the year.

A super lunar eclipse only happens once every 10-12 years.

People in North and South America will see the super eclipse before dawn on June 4, while people in Australia, some parts of East Asia and the Pacific Islands will have the chance to observe the eclipse after sunset, National Geographic said.

The Earth's shadow will be visible on the moon for more than two hours. When the shadow reaches its maximum size, about a third of the moon's disk will be in darkness. Mark Hammergren, a scientist at the Adler Planetarium in New York CityChicago, USA - confirmed that a lunar eclipse coinciding with a supermoon is a very rare phenomenon.

"A super lunar eclipse only happens once every 10 to 12 years," he said.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned. Because the earth is between the two celestial bodies, the moon moves through the earth's shadow. Because the moon revolves around the earth in an elliptical orbit, lunar eclipses do not usually occur at full moon.

According to Dang Tuan Duy, Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Amateur Astronomy Club (HAAC), the maximum lunar eclipse today will occur at 6:03 p.m. Vietnam time. "At that time, 37% of the moon's surface will be covered. The eclipse will begin at 5 p.m., when the moon is still below the horizon," Tuan Duy said.

However, Dang Tuan Duy said that due to unfavorable conditions, Vietnamese observersMalemissed the start of the eclipse, it was about 13 minutes after the maximum phase at 18:03, the moon rose above the horizon for Ho Chi Minh City. Meanwhile, in Hanoi, viewers had to wait until 18:38 to observe this phenomenon. The eclipse ended at 19:06.

The last total lunar eclipse occurred in December last year and the next total lunar eclipse will occur in August 2014.
