Universities are increasingly diversifying their admission methods, reducing their dependence on high school graduation exam scores. There are about 10 admission methods announced by schools in this year's admissions season.

As can be seen, most schools do not change much in terms ofAdmission methodMost schools still use direct admission methods, priority admission, review of academic records, review of high school graduation exam scores, review of competency assessment test results, etc. However, the ratio of quotas between methods has changed significantly in some schools.

Admission quota based on graduation exam scores has decreased sharply.

Instead of allocating most of the enrollment quota based on the results of the high school graduation exam as in previous years, this year, schools have simultaneously reduced their quotas to only 50% or less for this method. In fact, at some top schools, the number of quotas based on the results of the exam organized by the Ministry of Education and Training has been reduced to 10-20%, the lowest ever.

For example, the National Economics University has a quota of 10-15% of the total 6,100 quotas for the school's training programs. Hanoi University of Science and Technology is also expected to recruit only 10-20% of its quota based on graduation exam results for some training programs. This school even sets an additional quality assurance condition that candidates must have an average score of 7 or higher for each high school subject in the admission group (or a total average score of 42 or higher for 6 semesters of 3 subjects).

Many schools have simultaneously reduced their enrollment quotas to 50% or less for the admission method based on high school graduation exam results.

Similarly, at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), the admission method based on graduation exam scores only accounts for 15-50% of the quota by major/group of majors. The University of Transport in 2022 also reduced the admission quota based on high school graduation exam results by about 30% compared to 2021.

Instead, the enrollment quota for other admission methods increased.

Aptitude test reigns supreme?

There are schools that reserve most of their quotas from the results of the competency assessment tests of Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University or from the scores of the thinking assessment test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Currently, there are about 50 schools that plan to use the results of these three schools' own exams to supplement their admission methods.

At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the quota for the method of considering the results of the thinking assessment exam was increased by the school to 60 - 70%. The University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) also increased the quota for the admission method based on the results of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam to 40 - 60% of the school's total quota.

The University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) also reserves 40 - 70% of its admission quota based on the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University and 5 - 10% of its quota based on the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Hanoi National University.

Similarly, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) also plans to reserve 35-50% of its admission quota based on the results of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam and 3-10% of its quota based on the results of the Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam.

International certificates (IELTS, SAT, ACT, A-Level...) are popular.

Similar to the previous two admission seasons, this year, many schools continue to apply university admission methods using international certificates. Some admission methods using international certificates are applied by schools such as: admission combined with international foreign language certificates and academic results or international competency certificates (SAT, ACT, A-Level); admission combined with foreign language certificates and high school graduation exam results; admission combined with foreign language certificates and national university competency assessment test scores.

Some schools even reserve a large portion of their quotas for admission methods that combine international certificates. For example, the University of Commerce reserves about 40% of its total 4,150 enrollment quotas for this admission method; or the National Economics University plans to reserve 25-35% of its quota for admission methods that use international English certificates such as IELTS;...

Also in 2022, some schools have added some new methods in line with the spirit of university autonomy and ensuring fairness for target groups. One example is Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. This school plans to add an admission method that combines criteria to comprehensively assess candidates' abilities, including: academic ability, social activities, cultural and artistic activities, essays, recommendation letters, and interviews. This method is expected to be the main method of admission at the school from 2022.

The University of Information Technology (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) offers direct admission for sports talents. Accordingly, the school directly admits candidates who have won Gold, Silver, Bronze medals in official international sports competitions, including: World Championships, World Cups, Olympic Games, Asian Games (ASIAD), Asian Championships, Asian Cups, Southeast Asian Championships, Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), Southeast Asian Cups, etc.

Previously, when announcing the graduation exam and university admission plan for 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training recommended that universities and majors with high competition only use high school graduation exam results as a screening and preliminary selection tool, and then need to have additional forms of selection to better classify the selection subjects.

National universities, regional universities and schools/groups of universities that fully prepare the conditions can organize assessment exams as a basis for university and college admissions in 2022 and share and support other schools in need.
