More than 30,000 people have left the US Republican Party in recent weeks following the January 6 attack on the Capitol, the Hill newspaper reported, citing statistics.

It's worth noting that more than 30,000 registered Republicans left the party in just a handful of states that report voter registration and party change data.

On January 6, supporters of US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol. After Trump's rally in Washington, Congress was interrupted for several hours.

The riot left one protester and one police officer dead, and three others died of nonviolent causes. After law enforcement cleared rioters from the Capitol building, lawmakers certified Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

Impeach Donald Trump

The US House of Representatives impeached Trump on January 13 for inciting unrest with 232 votes in favor and 197 against. He became the first president in the history of the country to be impeached twice by the House. The US Senate postponed the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump until February 9, the decision was unanimously passed.

The Senate is considering impeachment after the president leaves office. If Trump is convicted, the Senate could hold a separate vote on whether to bar him from holding public office again. There is no consensus among legal experts on whether retroactive impeachment is constitutional, as the courts have never considered the issue. So senators have taken matters into their own hands.
