More than 50 billion VND to save wild elephants

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just signed a decision approving the project "Urgent elephant conservation and capacity building for ivory trade control in Vietnam by 2020" with a budget of more than 50 billion VND.

The project aims to sustainably conserve existing wild elephant populations in Vietnam, combining the restoration and protection of rare and endangered animal and plant genetic resources and biodiversity in elephant habitats. Strengthening law enforcement interactions, controlling illegal trade and transportation of elephant tusks and derivatives, contributing to the conservation of elephant populations in the country and around the world.

The project also aims to build a repository, preserve specimens, improve management capacity, monitor elephant and wildlife conservation for officials in special-use forests where elephants live in all special-use forests (except Nghe An, Dak Lak and Dong Nai provinces which have their own elephant conservation projects), build a nationwide database system, update the reproductive status of small elephant herds...

The Ministry will also plan habitats and movement corridors for elephants, limiting conflicts between elephants and humans. Plan to move individual elephants and herds of only female elephants, lacking habitat, to national elephant reserves for reproduction.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposed to investigate the crime of hunting and illegal transportation of endangered and rare wild animals...
