Viagra and green tea mixture helps kill cancer

The Journal of Medical Investigation (JCI) published on January 25 the results of an experimental study on mice showing that a drug to treat erectile dysfunction in men and green tea ingredients are effective in fighting cancer cells when combined.

Professor Hirofumi Tachibana of Kyushu University Graduate School in southern Japan, who is leading the research, said clinical trials of the treatment on humans are expected to begin in the US in late 2013. However, he warned people not to attempt the treatment at home due to concerns about possible side effects.

In 2004, Professor Tachibana announced that a catechin compound called EGCG, a component of green tea, had the ability to suppress the activity of cancer cells, although some researchers doubted its therapeutic effects. Later, Mr. Tachibana identified an enzyme in the body called PDE5 that could weaken the effects of EGCG.

Because erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra help to inactivate PDE5, Professor Tachibana injected these drugs into mice with leukemia at the same time as EGCG and found that the cancer cells did not increase. Meanwhile, the cancer cells disappeared when the mixture was injected into mice implanted with human breast cancer cells.

Test-tube studies have also been conducted on other cancers such as pancreatic, stomach and prostate cancer and this treatment method has shown to be more effective than current cancer treatments./.
