Honda's super cheap electric motorbike model revealed through patent

Last week, Honda filed a patent that revealed a super-affordable electric scooter based on the Shine 100, a 99cc commuter that’s hugely popular in India. The level of detail in the design suggests it’s no longer a concept, but almost production-ready.

Although the company has not officially announced it, experts believe that this electric car model is just waiting for the "nod" from Honda's leadership to enter the market.

Electric vehicle market demand is at a “perfect” level

Cheap electric scooters are booming in many developing countries such as India, Indonesia, Southeast Asia and Africa, where two-wheelers are essential transportation. The falling cost of batteries and the fluctuating cost of gasoline make electric scooters more affordable than ever.

Even in the US, which has been slow to adopt electric two-wheelers, the number of young people riding e-bikes and e-motos is growing. Honda is clearly targeting the key Asian market, but could also expand into Europe and North America, where demand for compact, affordable urban vehicles is growing rapidly.

Design and proposed configuration

Engine:small, mid-frame, estimated power 5-6 kW.

Maximum speed:about 80-90 km/h, enough for urban needs.

Battery:Two removable under-seat units, compatible with Honda Mobile Power Pack standard.

Removable batteries are key in dense urban areas, allowing users to easily bring their batteries into their homes to charge without needing a dedicated parking space. However, this also means that the battery capacity must be moderate to ensure lightness and portability.

Advantages of Honda electric vehicles over competitors

Indian brands like Ola, Ather and Hero Electric are already present, but Honda has a strong brand, global dealership network and extensive service network.

Honda's entry into the mainstream electric vehicle segment could be a game-changer, offering something that is both affordable and reliable, something many low-cost Chinese electric vehicles have failed to do.

The patent drawings show a complete, production-ready design, but actual implementation depends on a decision from Honda's management.

With a commitment to electrification and a target to phase out internal combustion engine motorcycles by the 2040s, the company is forced to act soon if it wants to dominate the market.
