Honda recalls nearly 1 million Odyssey vehicles in the US market
US traffic safety authorities announced that Japan's third-largest automaker, Honda Motor Co, has issued a recall order for nearly 1 million Odyssey vehicles circulating in the US market due to a technical defect that could lead to a fire.
The March 15 announcement by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that the 886,815 Odysseys subject to recall are 2005-2010 model year vehicles manufactured at the company's plant in Lincoln, Alabama, between June 23, 2004 and September 4, 2010.
Honda's announcement to NHTSA said the reason for the recall is that the fuel pump housing may crack, causing fuel leakage and leading to a risk of fire.
As of the recall, there have been no reports of fires or injuries related to the defect. The fuel pumps in the vehicles are manufactured by the Japanese company Denso.
Honda Motor has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer since 1959 and is currently the world's eighth largest automobile manufacturer. In 2013, Honda exported 108,750 vehicles to the US market and imported 88,357 from the US.
Regarding technical errors in automobiles, on March 14, the Center for Auto Safety in the US published an investigation report stating that a total of 303 people died in traffic accidents related to defective airbags in 1.6 million passenger cars manufactured by General Motors (GM) and recalled last month, including 1.4 million in the US market, the rest in Canada and Mexico.
The death toll is much higher than GM's reported 12 deaths in 34 incidents linked to the recalled vehicles.
On March 11, the US Congress opened an investigation into technical defects in GM-made vehicles and is expected to hold hearings to find out why GM and NHTSA were slow in reporting vehicle defects and resolving technical defects after receiving customer complaints.
GM recalled vehicles last month including 2005-2007 Chevrolets, Cobalts, Pontiac G5s, Pontiac Pursuits, 2003-2007 Saturn Ions, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHRs, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky./.
