Vietnam and China Cooperation in the East Sea

Based on the common understanding of the senior leaders of Vietnam and China, the guiding principles defined in the “Agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of maritime issues between Vietnam and China” signed by the two sides on October 11, 2011 and the agreement reached between the two heads of the Government-level negotiation delegations on the territorial border of the two countries, the two sides held the first round of negotiations of the Working Group on cooperation in less sensitive areas at sea from May 29-30, 2012 in Beijing, China.

The two sides exchanged views on the implementation of cooperation between the two countries in the following areas: Marine environmental protection; Marine scientific research; Search and rescue at sea; Prevention and mitigation of the impact of natural disasters.

The two sides reached consensus on the principles of cooperation of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit, as well as the working mechanism of the Working Group. The two sides agreed to hold the second round of negotiations in Vietnam in the second half of this year.
