Hung Nguyen offers incense to commemorate reformer Nguyen Truong To

(Baonghean.vn)- On November 22, Hung Nguyen district organized a flower and incense offering ceremony to commemorate the 187th birthday of patriotic reformer Nguyen Truong To.

Attending the incense and flower offering ceremony were leaders of Hung Nguyen district, Hung Trung commune, representatives of the clan and students of schools named after Nguyen Truong To.

Nguyen Truong To (1828 - 1871) was born in Bui Chu village, Hung Nguyen district. He grew up in a poor Confucian family, following Catholicism. From a young age, he was famous for being intelligent, erudite, with a rich knowledge of Chinese studies. Growing up, he learned French, and gained new knowledge about science, technology, and Western civilization. After that, he went to France, Rome, and Hong Kong to study and work.

Hung Nguyen district leaders presented gifts to Nguyen Truong To's relatives.

After the Nham Tuat Treaty (1862), Nguyen Truong To stopped collaborating with France and returned to Gia Dinh. From here, he wrote petitions and sent them to the Hue court about programs to reform the country in all areas.

His petitions were not used by the Nguyen Dynasty but they clearly showed his ardent patriotism and demonstrated the reform and innovation of the patriot Nguyen Truong To. Nguyen Truong To also left for posterity a shining example of self-study, patriotism, and dedication to the nation.

On this occasion, leaders of Hung Nguyen district visited and presented gifts to relatives of patriotic reformer Nguyen Truong To.
