Hung Yen has ambition to build a seaport to receive 200,000-ton ships, raising its position
Hung Yen proposed to build Diem Dien port to receive 200,000-ton ships, comparable to Cai Mep, with the expectation of becoming a Southeast Asian logistics center.
The People's Committee of Hung Yen province has just submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Construction for approval of a project to build a large-scale seaport in the Diem Dien area. This port is designed to receive super cargo ships with a capacity of up to 200,000 tons, a strategic step to expand the economic space towards the sea and turn Hung Yen into a leading logistics center in Southeast Asia.
Diem Dien Port: Strategic vision and investment scale
According to the plan, the Diem Dien seaport area will include the Diem Dien, Tra Ly, and Ba Lat wharf areas, along with a system of buoy wharfs, transshipment areas, anchorage areas, and storm shelters. By 2030, this port area is planned to meet the cargo throughput of 6.8 to nearly 8 million tons/year, of which container cargo will reach about 0.02 million TEU. The port system is expected to have 10-11 wharfs, 12-13 wharves with a total length of nearly 2,500m.

The important point in the planning is the upgrading of the Diem Dien maritime route to accommodate ships with a capacity of up to 5,000 tons. At the same time, Tra Ly port area will also be invested in a liquid/gas terminal to serve the Thai Binh LNG Power Plant, in line with the national electricity development orientation.
The total investment capital expected for this seaport system by 2030 is estimated at VND11,200 billion. Of this, nearly VND8,000 billion will be spent on developing public maritime infrastructure and more than VND3,300 billion will be spent on investing in ports.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Than, Chairman of Hung Yen Provincial People's Committee, said that expanding the economic space towards the sea is the province's strategic goal in the coming period. To realize this vision, Hung Yen needs to have breakthrough policy mechanisms, synchronous and smart transport infrastructure, creating leverage for the development of key economic sectors.
The position of Diem Dien port in the region and internationally
Previously, in the Conclusion Notice No. 243 of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the development orientation of Thai Binh province (old), the Ministry of Construction was assigned to preside over and coordinate with localities and relevant ministries and branches to study investment in Diem Dien port area, with the capacity to receive ships with a capacity of 200,000 tons.
If implemented, Diem Dien port will become the second seaport in Vietnam capable of receiving such large ships, on par with major seaports in the region.
Currently, in Vietnam, Cai Mep port is the only port that can accommodate ships up to 214,000 tons. Other ports such as Lach Huyen (Hai Phong) accommodates ships of 145,000 tons, Nghi Son (Thanh Hoa) accommodates ships of 100,000 tons, and Vung Tau only accommodates ships of 50,000 tons.
Compared to ports in Southeast Asia, Bangkok port (Thailand) can accommodate 120,000-ton ships, Manila port (Philippines) 150,000 tons, Kuantan port (Malaysia) 40,000 tons, and Singapore port is the largest port, able to accommodate ships up to 400,000 tons.
The Diem Dien seaport project is expected to create a breakthrough, turning Hung Yen and the northern coastal economic region into a key logistics and import-export center, increasing its position on the regional seaport map.
