According to RIA Novosti, in an interview with ONT TV (Belarus), Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Hungary has not yet decided whether to participate in the conference on Ukraine in Switzerland, because the country doubts its effectiveness.
“We have not made a decision yet. And I will tell you why. On the one hand, we really respect Switzerland. We respect Switzerland’s efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine. We really respect their position. But at the same time, the question is whether a peace conference is reasonable without all the parties to the conflict,” the Hungarian foreign minister said.
Mr. Szijjártó stressed that, without representatives of both sides of the conflict, the legitimate question would be whether the entire conference was justified from the point of view of the ultimate goal, namely the desire for peace.
“Therefore, we believe that a peace conference has real meaning and offers the best hope for peace, if both sides of the conflict sit down at the negotiating table,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó.
Switzerland will host a conference to discuss peace in Ukraine in Lucerne on June 15-16. Representatives of about 160 countries have been invited to the meeting. However, Russia has not been invited to the event.
So far, Brazil and South Africa have confirmed that their leaders will not attend the conference. Likewise, US President Joe Biden will not attend either.
Meanwhile, China has refused to attend. In addition, media reports also said that Saudi Arabia will not have a representative in Switzerland.
