Hungary vows to block new EU sanctions on Russian gas
On October 22, at a press conference, Chief of the Hungarian Government Office Gergely Gulyas said that the country will block new sanctions by the European Union (EU) on Russian gas.
Hungary will continue to veto any EU sanctions on Russian gas if they affect gas supplies to Hungarian companies, Gergely Gulyas said. This is not a “quid pro quo” gesture towards the Russian Federation, and gas contracts with Russia do not affect Hungary’s position on the conflict in Ukraine, he noted.

Hungary’s Chief of Staff stressed that the country does not support EU sanctions against Russia, as “they only harm European countries and do not contribute to resolving the situation in Ukraine.” The official called on the US and the EU to participate in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, arguing that this is the only way to reach a solution to the conflict.
After Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, the EU imposed strong sanctions on Russia, including on the energy sector, causing electricity and gas prices in Europe to increase. Despite the energy crisis, Europe continues to discuss new sanctions against Russia, including the application of oil and gas price caps./.
