(Baonghean) –Coming to Thanh Da parish (Quynh Thanh, Quynh Luu), from the beginning of the village to the alleys, every house has bonsai trees. At first, the hobby of bonsai trees was only for a few people, but now it has developed throughout the village and this is a new direction that brings economic efficiency to the parishioners here.

Playing bonsai comes from passion but it is also thanks to bonsai that has helped Mr. Tran Van Nguyen's family in hamlet 9 (Quynh Thanh) from poverty to become one of the families with economic conditions in the commune. Under his talented hands, the bonsai trees clinging to rocks are trimmed and curved to create different shapes that are both aesthetic and have high economic value.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen's Bodhi tree is honored to be exhibited.
Thang Long-Hanoi Millennium Bonsai Festival.

While pruning the tree, Mr. Nguyen recalled: Before, I was a veterinarian, then went to medical school, but I often went to families with bonsai trees to see how they took care of them, learned from their experiences, and my passion for bonsai trees captivated me. In 2002, I had no money, so I only bought low-value trees to plant. After that, I decided to borrow money and go to bonsai villages to learn, buy tree varieties to recreate at home in my own way. The garden grew more and more and more customers came to order. In the first years, my family's garden was only 1-2 years old and sold, with limited capital. Gradually, I saved up capital, went to the South and the North to collect trees, including wild trees, and shaped them to suit my needs, and these trees had high economic value. Thanks to that, the amount of trees exported and imported is continuous, up to now I have grown 3 gardens with more than 300 trees, including trees worth hundreds of millions of VND, small trees worth tens of millions. In particular, the family's Bodhi tree was honored to be chosen as a work of art for the exhibition of ornamental plants at the Thang Long-Hanoi millennium festival.

Not only Mr. Nguyen, many households in Quynh Thanh have become rich from growing ornamental plants. For example, Mr. Ho Sy Thien's family has difficult family circumstances, so after a period of taking care of ornamental plants and accumulating experience, he decided to borrow capital to develop the economy from ornamental plants. Having traveled to many places, even to Laos to collect ornamental plants, his family's garden has been expanding day by day, he himself is one of the highly skilled people in the village. He currently has two nurseries with over 200 trees worth billions. Thanks to the high income from growing ornamental plants, his family has been able to build a two-story house and send 8 children to school.

Bonsai is Ho Sy Thien's passion.

Bonsai trees grown in Quynh Thanh are very diverse such as: Sanh, Bodhi, Barringtonia, Snow Pine, Fir, ... including rock-climbing trees. According to experience, planting rock-climbing trees requires a lot of effort in collecting tree and rock varieties. With the current price, a normal stone costs millions, some cost tens of millions of dong. The type of Sanh tree that clings to rocks must be planted into the rock and especially must pay attention to its root cluster, the more roots around the base of the rock will make the tree more beautiful and valuable. The base of the tree must be covered with a plastic bag for the roots to develop. Every morning, the tree must be watered to prevent frost from eating the tree and in the evening to keep the tree moist. The bonsai created must have ideas and themes. In addition to the classical style, there are different bonsai schools depending on the market and different regions.

Mr. Ho Huu Toan - Vice President of the Quynh Thanh Commune Ornamental Plants Association, who has been playing with ornamental plants for more than 30 years, said: “Quynh Thanh is a Catholic commune with 12,000 Catholics. Previously, the economic life of the people was mainly rice cultivation and livestock raising with low economic efficiency. Currently, ornamental plants are a key direction in the economic development of the commune, over 90% of families play with ornamental plants and are a model for sightseeing in the whole province”.

Quynh Thanh youth now do not have to go far away to work for hire but get rich right on their homeland. People have converted barren land, consolidated fields and plots into gardens growing ornamental plants for high income, earning hundreds of millions of VND/year. From stages such as grafting, growing ornamental plants, people learn from each other to develop and replicate the economic model from ornamental plants. And also from growing ornamental plants, many jobs have been created for other groups of jobs such as: transportation, digging stones, trading and commercial services...
