Rare: Man jumps off overpass to commit suicide, falls on pedestrian and dies

An American boy jumped off an overpass, killing a driver below.

Marisa Harris, 22, was driving under an overpass in Virginia, USA, when a 12-year-old boy fell from the sky onto her car.

The boy was seriously injured and rushed to hospital. Meanwhile, Harris died at the scene.

Harris' boyfriend, who was sitting next to her, managed to pull off the highway and stop. Luckily, he was not injured.

Harris' family said she was a graduate student at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.

The highway was temporarily closed for several hours while police worked at the scene.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1999 to 2015, 711 12-year-olds committed suicide in the United States.

Of these, 507 were boys and 204 were girls. The lowest rates were in 2007 and 2008, when 25 children committed suicide each year. In 2014 and 2015, the rates increased to 68 and 56 children per year, respectively.

During the same period, 1,309 children ages 5 to 12 in the United States attempted suicide. It is unclear how many of those children attempted but failed. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says that, on average, 1 in 25 suicide attempts among adults resulted in death.
