Doctors at the Provincial General Hospital shared a rare case they just encountered: a young man was admitted to the hospital due to a very large foreign object, a bidet, in his abdomen.

Dr. Tran Van Vinh, Department of General and Digestive Surgery (Hai Duong General Hospital) said that the patient had just been discharged from the hospital 10 days after surgery to remove a foreign object from the abdomen.

Previously, the 18-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital in a conscious state, with a foreign object in his abdomen.

After taking an X-ray, the doctors discovered a large, radiopaque foreign body in the abdomen. Through questioning and examining the patient, he said that when he used a bidet to defecate, during the flushing process, his anus contracted, causing the bidet to go deep into the rectum and could not be pulled back. Therefore, the patient used a knife to cut off the bidet and went to the hospital immediately afterward.

Dr. Vinh said that through anal examination, it was found that the foreign object was shaped like a silicon tube, very strong and could not be removed through the anus. The foreign object also caused bleeding in the intestinal mucosa.

Doctors say that rectal foreign bodies like this one are rare, and the foreign body is so large that it cannot wait for the patient to defecate. If left for a long time, the foreign body will continue to cause bleeding in the intestinal mucosa, not to mention serious risks such as intestinal obstruction and intestinal rupture, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

The long foreign body, which is a water pipe, was removed.

Therefore, after consultation, the doctors decided to perform surgery to remove the foreign object from the patient. The surgical team opened the abdomen and sigmoid colon and removed the entire faucet and discharge head, about 45 cm long.

The foreign object caused damage and inflammation to the intestinal mucosa, so the doctors removed the sigmoid colon to create an artificial anus and planned to re-establish intestinal circulation (reconnect the intestines) when conditions were met.
