Greece dissolves parliament and sets election date

The Greek government on May 19 announced a presidential decree dissolving parliament and announcing the holding of a new early parliamentary election on June 17.

The decree was announced two days after the caretaker government in Greece was sworn in and the new 300-member parliament (elected on May 6) was convened.

The caretaker government in Greece led by Prime Minister Panayiotis Pikrammenos is tasked with running the country and organizing a new election after political parties in the country failed to form a coalition government following the May 6 election.

According to analysts, setting a date for the general election will partly remove some of the instability, but Greece still has to deal with a series of difficulties ahead.

There is no guarantee that the new general election will produce a viable government as the far-left Syriza party, which came second in the last general election, opposes the joint bailout deal between the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

This means more uncertainty for Greece's future in the eurozone.
