(Baonghean) - At the 26th SEA Games held in Indonesia 2 years ago, Nghe An sports participated with 9 athletes and won 2 bronze medals in the women's shuttlecock event. It can be said that this is a rather modest achievement compared to the potential of Nghe An sports in the regional arena. Therefore, a gold medal at the 27th SEA Games is the desire of the sports industry as well as fans of the province.

For the 27th SEA Games held in Myanmar this year, Nghe An contributed 1 coach and 10 athletes. They are coach Hoang Huu Nghia (soccer) and the athletes: Tran Nguyen Manh, Pham Manh Hung, Tran Dinh Hoang, Nguyen Huy Hung, Tran Phi Son (soccer), Nguyen Thi Quyen, Nguyen Thi Hoa, Nguyen Thi Mo (soccer) and Le Thi Tham (weightlifting). Among the expected athletes, female weightlifter Le Thi Tham is the most promising.

Born in 1992, with good qualities and diligent training, in 2009 and 2010, Le Thi Tham won all 3 gold medals (snatch, clean and jerk and total) at the national youth weightlifting championships. From 2011 to now, although competing in both youth and national championships, this female athlete from Nghe An has proven that she has no rivals in the 69 kg weight class when she consecutively won all 3 gold medals in all tournaments. With that impressive achievement, Tham was called to the national women's weightlifting team (including 6 athletes) to compete in the 27th SEA Games. After a 3-month training trip in China, Tham and athlete Do Thi Thu Hoai (48 kg class) are considered the golden hope of Vietnamese weightlifting.

In Sepak Takraw, the three athletes Nguyen Thi Quyen, Nguyen Thi Hoa and Nguyen Thi Mo are also expected to win the gold medal in the women's team event. Compared to the women's doubles event, the path to the gold medal for the players in the women's team event is much more difficult (because Thailand does not participate in the doubles event but focuses on the team event). However, in recent years, under the guidance of coach Hoang Huu Nghia, the female players have made much progress compared to 2 years ago in the team event, demonstrated by achieving good results at the World Championship (held in September) and the Asian Championship (held in November). Therefore, the possibility of competing for the coach in this event is still open.

As usual, at the SEA Games, SLNA Club contributed many faces to the U23 team and in this SEA Games, there were 5 players from Nghe An participating. Among them, central defender Manh Hung and midfielder Huy Hung are the pillars of the team, while the remaining players are reliable "cards up the sleeve" of coach Hoang Van Phuc, especially midfielder Phi Son. In the opening match against U23 Brunei, just 15 minutes after coming on from the bench (minute 67), Phi Son left his mark with a beautiful dribble and shot on the left wing - a move that fully demonstrated the technical qualities and speed of this player.

At this SEA Games, Nghe An sports have many regrettable absences. With the "very local" rules and regulations that often occur at the SEA Games, the medal races in Myanmar this year are predicted to be very fierce. The host country has eliminated many sports and many strong events of other countries. For that reason, Nghe An sports have also lost many strong events that could win gold medals. For example, in wushu, the host country has eliminated many weight categories in the Sanshou (combat) event, causing athlete Nguyen Van Tai (65 kg weight category - Silver medal at the 2012 World Championship) to lose the opportunity to participate in the first SEA Games of his career. In addition, the fact that shuttlecock was not included in the competition program meant that two excellent shuttlecock athletes from Nghe An, Le Cong Tai and Nguyen Thi Thanh, could not participate in the regional sports festival. Besides, there are also some unfortunate injuries such as Ngo Hoang Thinh (football) and Truong Van Mao (pencak silat) - the most unfortunate of which is midfielder Hoang Thinh. If he recovers from his injury in time, Hoang Thinh will certainly be an irreplaceable pillar in the midfield of U23 Vietnam.

This year, the athletes participating in the SEA Games have received much attention from the provincial sports sector. Mr. Lo Trung Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: "During the preparation period for the SEA Games, the athletes all had good living and training conditions at the national training centers with a meal allowance of 300,000 VND/day. In addition, the province issued Decision 5779/QD-UBND.VX dated December 4 on funding support for athletes and coaches participating in the SEA Games, accordingly, each athlete and coach will receive 2 million VND from the province.

On November 8, leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Sports Training and Coaching Center went to Hanoi to organize a meeting with Nghe An athletes participating in the SEA Games and personally handed over the above support money to the athletes. This has shown the province's concern for high-achieving athletes, contributing to encouraging the athletes to compete well". Mr. Nguyen Hoang Trung - Deputy Director of the Sports Training and Coaching Center said: "During the SEA Games, we will try to keep in touch with our athletes by phone and Facebook to encourage them, helping them to have the highest confidence before each match". Over the phone, athlete Nguyen Thi Quyen shared: "Although we know Thailand is a very strong opponent, we are not worried because we have had a very good preparation process. My teammates and I will compete with the highest determination to bring glory to Vietnamese sports and Nghe An sports".

We know that it is difficult to predict anything in sports, but with the attention of sports managers and the determination of athletes, Nghe An's sports achievements in Myanmar this year will be improved.
