October 9, 2015 07:31

The small SUV has a similar design to the Santa Fe, a 1.6-liter engine and a price close to the Tucson segment.

When Hyundai launched the Creta in late July in India, industry experts in this market assessed that the Korean car company had the right development formula, by equipping it with many features, a not-too-neutral design, and a moderate engine. Hyundai also applied this approach to the Vietnamese market.

Creta arrived in Vietnam just over 2 months after its launch in India, and just 2 months after the i20 Active was launched to Vietnamese customers. Hyundai has been aggressively filling the small car segment, increasing customer choices as the year-end shopping season approaches.

Creta has a design inspired by its big brothers Sante Fe and Tucson. But if the big brothers still keep the usual smoothness of Hyundai, Creta is square, straight and somewhat edgy. Headlights, LED daytime running lights, radiator grille similar to Santa Fe, sporty front bumper occupying half of the front space, large, vertical fog lights.

The interior also has the general layout of Hyundai, with two large air-conditioning vents limiting the utility screen, below are the automatic air-conditioning and fan control knobs. 6-speaker sound system, CD, Mp3, USB, AUX, Bluetooth connection.

Vehicle amenities include push-button start, rear camera, 8-way power driver's seat, height-adjustable steering wheel with integrated function buttons, and rear seat air vents.

Creta is in the segment below Tucson, but with dimensions of 4,270 mm long, 1,780 mm wide, 1,665 mm high, and a wheelbase of 2,590 mm, the car is slightly larger than the segment that Ford EcoSport is in. Ford's model has dimensions of 3,999 mm long, 1,765 mm wide, 1,708 mm high, and a wheelbase of only 2,520 mm, 70 mm shorter than Creta. In terms of size, Creta is in between B-size and C-size SUVs.

Hyundai Thanh Cong distributes Creta in Vietnam with two versions of 1.6-liter gasoline and 1.6-liter diesel engines. Specifically, the 1.6-liter Gamma II gasoline engine produces 123 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 151 Nm at 4,850 mm.

1.6-liter U2 diesel engine, CRDi direct fuel injection, VGT variable valve timing turbocharger, 128 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, maximum torque of 260 Nm at 1,900-2,750 rpm. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

With these two options, Creta is more powerful than Ford EcoSport, which only has a 1.5-liter engine with a capacity of 110 horsepower and maximum torque of 140 Nm.

Safety technology on the crossover includes 6 airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, BA emergency brake assist, ESC electronic balance, HAC hill start assist.

The selling price for Vietnamese customers is 806 million for Creta petrol engine and 846 million for Creta diesel engine. This price is also nearly 200 million higher than Ford EcoSport (606-681 million).

With a larger size, larger engine, and higher price, Hyundai positions Creta in a higher segment than Ford EcoSport and closer to Tucson, where there is no model in the Vietnamese market. Meanwhile, its sibling i20 Active will be the main competitor of EcoSport.
