IAEA: Japan underestimated tsunami damage
The United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on June 1 that Japan had downplayed the damage caused by the tsunami to its nuclear power plants and said investigators needed to be independent.

However, the agency praised Japan's response to the disaster as a "model experience" to learn from.
In a report to the Japanese government, the IAEA fact-finding mission said: "The damage caused by the tsunami to some sites has been underestimated. Nuclear power plant designers and operators need to properly assess and take measures to protect against the risks of natural disasters. They should also periodically update these assessments and other assessment methods."
