Independent: Russia becomes a superpower after agreement with the US on Syria
Military cooperation with the US on Syria could help Russia regain the superpower status it lost with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Such cooperation would also “become a powerful impetus” for joint action against weakened terrorist groups such as the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

This is stated in an article published in the British newspaper The Independent: "The Russian and American operational plan and its implementation will be the longest air campaign in Syria and perhaps the most prominent aspect of the agreement announced in Geneva early on September 10... The successful implementation of this plan will create conditions for Russia to restore its superpower status," the author of the article commented.
Last week in Geneva, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry agreed to adopt a package of five documents, designed to establish a regime to end hostilities in Syria and lay the foundations for resuming the political process.
These documents include the distinction between opposition and terrorists, the basis for new air strikes by the US and Russian Air Forces, procedures for responding to ceasefire violations, and the distribution of humanitarian aid to millions of people in need.
