Indonesia officially announced the results of the presidential election

Mr. Joko Widodo was officially confirmed as the winner and will take office on October 20.

On the evening of July 22, the General Election Commission (GEC) of Indonesia officially announced the final vote counting results of the July 9 presidential election, according to which Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo defeated the Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto.

“Presidential and Vice President No. 1, Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Ragiasa, won 46.85% of the valid votes. Presidential and Vice President No. 2, Joko Widodo and Giut Kanla, won 53.15% of the votes nationwide,” said Kamil Manik, head of the General Election Commission.

Thus, Mr. Joko Widodo was officially confirmed as the winner and will take office after incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's term expires on October 20.

The results were announced just hours after Mr Subianto announced his withdrawal from the election process, citing electoral fraud. He was joined by his running mate Hatta Radjasa and his entire team.

However, according to a later correction by a member of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, the Chairman of this party "did not withdraw from the election process but only from the vote counting process", implying the possibility that Mr. Subianto would not recognize the official results just announced by the General Election Commission.

According to Indonesian regulations, in case Mr. Subianto does not recognize the election results due to allegations of fraud or election irregularities, the Constitutional Court will have two weeks to make a final decision from the time of receiving the complaint./.
