According to Channel News Asia, Indonesia is currently the country with the highest number of Covid-19 infections and deaths in Southeast Asia. The government is struggling to deal with the highly contagious variants.

In another development, Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that many hospitals in the capital Jakarta have been allocated additional beds to cope with the recent surge in new infections. In addition, the city government has also set up a number of field hospitals to treat patients with mild symptoms.

China achieves vaccination target

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) on June 26 quoted Cui Gang, an official from the National Health Commission of China, as saying that the country has achieved its goal of vaccinating 630 million people.

“More than 40% of China’s population has been vaccinated. This is a major step towards establishing herd immunity. Joint efforts from developers and manufacturersVaccine, along with many management agencies, are important factors in ensuring the supply of Covid-19 vaccines," Mr. Thoi said.

According to SCMP, Chinese health authorities were only able to administer about 2 million doses of vaccines per day at the end of March. But this month, the number of vaccines administered per day has increased to an average of about 18 million doses. The reason for the vaccination boom may be due to the expansion of vaccine manufacturers in China, as well as people's awareness of vaccination after many new outbreaks.

The Chinese government's next target is expected to be to increase the vaccination rate to 70% by the end of this year.

Germany steps up vaccinations against Delta variant

Reuters news agency quoted German Health Minister Jens Spahn on June 26 as saying that the country needs to step up vaccination to combat the spreading Delta variant.

“The government will deliver 5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to vaccination centers across the country in the first week of July, and the pharmaceutical company Moderna will deliver twice as many vaccines as they initially committed,” Mr. Spahn said.

According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), about a third of Germans have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. The country's current goal is to vaccinate at least 80% of the total population nationwide in order to achieve community immunity.
