Indonesian officials said on January 12 that they had recovered the black box recording data from AirAsia flight QZ8501 that crashed in the Java Sea.

"I received information from the head of the National Transportation Safety Board that at 7:11 a.m. (local time), the search team successfully recovered the flight data recorder," the head of Indonesia's rescue agency said.

He added that divers had only retrieved the flight data recorder, while the cockpit voice recorder was still being searched for.

The black box of an aircraft consists of two devices, the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, which are important evidence to determine how the plane crashed.

Previously, after salvaging the tail of the plane on January 11, the Indonesian search team also discovered the plane's black box, which is still emitting a 'ping' signal 30 days after being activated.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transport said the flight data recorder was sandwiched between two pieces of plane debris, so divers had to separate and lift the debris with balloons to retrieve the black box.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501, carrying 162 people, crashed on December 28 while en route from Surabaya to Singapore. Indonesia's meteorological agency said bad weather caused the Airbus A320-200 to crash into the sea.

However, authorities still need to analyze data from the plane's black box before making an official conclusion./.
