"Insidious 3" extends the franchise of psychological horror films

The third installment in the series about demons is a well-rounded work, carrying the spiritual horror style that made the name of Asian director - James Wan.

Insidious: Chapter 3 is the latest installment in the popular low-budget horror series, which first debuted in 2010. This project sees a shift in the creative team of the series. Leigh Whannell, the screenwriter of the previous two installments, takes on the role of director for the first time. Meanwhile, Malaysian-born filmmaker James Wan is in charge of production. Also because Leigh Whannell is the scriptwriter for most of James Wan's films, Insidious: Chapter 3 retains the consistent creepy style of the entire Insidious series, as well as the spiritual horror identity that has made a name for Asian-born director James Wan.

The film takes place three years before the incident in the Lambert family. At this time, the medium Elise Rainier had just lost her husband. Missing her husband so much, Elise went into the unknown to meet him. Unfortunately, she was pursued by a female ghost who threatened to kill her every time she wanted to practice her necromancy. When the young girl Quinn Brenner was about to be lured to the other world by an evil spirit, the medium Elise Rainier risked her life to save her.

No more complicated and dramatic than the previous two episodes, Insidious: Chapter 3 scares the audience with a tight script with a moderate amount of scary details. Every twist and turn in the script is logical. The film continues to instill fear with familiar spiritual details such as haunted family, little girl possessed by a demon, exorcism book, séance room, ghosts returning to the living world, mediums separating souls to the void, psychics fighting with demons.

The spiritual world in the new film is described more clearly. The level of horror increases every 30 minutes, the film leads the audience into the unknown. Every time she performs the soul-calling ritual, the main character, the shaman Elise, chooses a place completely immersed in darkness, occasionally hearing miserable cries, cat meows, whispers, and wandering shadows. Through that, the fictional world of the dead in the film becomes a unique element, attracting the audience.

The cinematography and editing of Insidious: Chapter 3 are a big plus. The cinematography always moves from wide shots to close-ups, frequently changing the angle to increase the horror. This style of filming always makes the viewer feel like something will suddenly happen, like a creepy grab. The interior scenes of dimly lit rooms and in the dark unknown are skillfully staged and lit. The soundtrack is like a ghostly sound, increasing the overall horror.

Veteran star Lin Shayne shines in the cast with her perfect performance. Lin Shayne transforms into the character of the psychic Elise Rainier - who plays an important role in communicating with victims of dark supernatural forces. Through the actress's acting, the mysteries in the character's soul gradually reveal themselves, showing the image of a woman tormented by the pain of losing her husband. In the second half of the film, Lin Shayne transforms into a strong and brave heroine, performing action scenes - both humorous and scary - in the fight against the devil.

Insidious: Chapter 3 will be released in Vietnamese theaters from June 4.
