The Telegraph (UK) reported on September 29 that in a survey of the greatest technological inventions of the past 50 years, Apple's iPhone was voted to top the list, while Sony's groundbreaking portable cassette player came in second place, ahead of the iPod.
In a poll by T3.com, the company that conducted the survey, Apple also received good news when three of the American technology giant's products were named in the top 10.
Introduced 32 years ago, the Walkman was the first mass-market device that allowed music to be listened to outside the home and car.
Compared to the thousands of songs that today's MP3 players can store, the tiny capacity of Walkman cassette tapes, which typically held 25 songs, seems paltry, but the first Walkman had features that would put the latest iPod to shame, such as two headphone jacks, allowing users to enjoy music with friends, and the ability to replace batteries.
“The fact that over 30 years later, the original Sony Walkman is still considered a greater invention than the iPod is a testament to how groundbreaking Sony's cassette player was,” said Kieran Alger, editor of T3.com.
The top 10 technological inventions of the past 50 years according to T3.com's survey results are Apple iPhone, Sony Walkman, Apple iPod, Microsoft Windows operating system, Apple iPad, YouTube, Sony Trinitron T, Sky+, Facebook, VHS video recorder.
