Iran makes new nuclear proposal to P5+1 Group
On May 23, the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group, including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany, ended without achieving any breakthrough results.
At the meeting held in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Iran presented a new package of proposals for the parties to continue the next round of negotiations. According to Iranian media, Tehran presented a five-point package of proposals based on the principles of gradualism and reciprocity. However, the news did not provide further details about these proposals.
Earlier in the day, the P5+1 group also presented another proposal to Iran. This proposal included an agreement that Iran would ship enriched uranium abroad in exchange for fuel for a nuclear reactor for medical research purposes.
However, the P5+1 did not commit to easing or suspending existing sanctions, instead pledging only to refrain from imposing new sanctions, ease purchases of aircraft components, and consider suspending the EU's insurance ban on Iranian oil tankers.
Tehran has criticized the P5+1 group's proposals as unfair and ineffective for the parties to move forward to the next round of negotiations, and demanded that the P5+1 withdraw these proposals.
Currently, Western diplomatic sources confirm that Iran and the P5+1 group will continue negotiations in Baghdad today, May 24./.
