IS, which controls large parts of northern Iraq, said four of its foreign fighters carried out the bombings on Saturday, targeting Iraqi army and allied positions in the town of Hajjaj, which lies on the road between Tikrit and Baiji.

Seven soldiers and four members of the Popular Mobilization Forces, the umbrella body for most of the Shiite units and volunteer forces deeply involved in the fight against IS in Iraq, were killed.

At least 27 people were also injured in the coordinated attack. One of the four vehicles carrying the bomb was defused before reaching its target, a police colonel said.

AFP news agency also reported that a military officer said that the vehicles used were all identical, all new cars that looked like an official convoy.

Pro-IS social media accounts posted images of suicide bombers preparing for the attack, posing with vehicles matching descriptions from sources.

The photos, posted with the logo of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), said the bombers were of Kuwaiti, German, Palestinian and British nationality.
