Israel urges US to get more involved in war in Syria

(Baonghean.vn) - On October 3, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that President Bashar al-Assad is winning the war in Syria, and urged the US to get more involved in this war, in the context that Damascus' allies, Iran and the Hezbollah Islamic movement, are gaining advantages on the ground.

The Israeli defense chief’s comments mark a reversal of his country’s position. From the start of the Syrian war in 2011 until mid-2015, top Israeli officials had predicted that President Assad would lose control of the country and be overthrown.

“I saw a long line of international players trying to get support from Assad, including Western countries and the moderate Sunni Syrian opposition,” Lieberman told the Israeli news site Walla. “Suddenly everyone wanted to be close to Assad.”

“We hope that the United States will be more active in Syria and the Middle East in general,” the top Israeli defense official said. “We are dealing with Russia, Iran, Turkey and Hezbollah, and this is no longer a simple problem to deal with on a daily basis.”

However, Mr. Lieberman did not specify what action he expected the Trump administration to take. He said: “The United States is facing many challenges of its own, but as a trend – the more active the United States is, the better it is for the State of Israel.”
