Israel airstrikes Syrian scientific research center

At least two people were killed and five injured in the airstrike.

According to a source from the Syrian military, on January 30, Israeli fighter jets violated Syrian airspace when they bombed a scientific research center in the Jamraya area, near the capital Damascus.

The main building at the scientific research center that was just attacked was severely damaged.

The scientific research center has also been the target of attacks by armed opposition groups in Syria. However, Israel confirmed that the target of this airstrike was not the scientific research center, but a convoy suspected of carrying chemical weapons.

In another development related to the situation in Syria, the head of the Syrian National Council - the main opposition force in the country, Mr. Moaz al-Khatib, announced on January 30 that he is ready to negotiate with members of President Bashar al-Assad's government to bring a peaceful end to the nearly 2-year-long civil war. However, Mr. Moaz al-Khatib still affirmed that Mr. al-Assad must step down.

Moaz al-Khatib's statement came as the Syrian government said some opposition forces would be allowed to safely return to Damascus to take part in national dialogue. President al-Assad had previously proposed a peace initiative, including national dialogue and the formation of a new government and constitution. However, the opposition rejected the initiative.

There has been no official response from President al-Assad's government. Meanwhile, the Syrian National Council said that Moaz al-Khatib's statement was personal and did not reflect the views of the opposition coalition in Syria, and affirmed its refusal to negotiate.

The Syrian opposition is divided between political and military groups. These two forces always have different opinions on how to deal with President al-Assad's government. This division is damaging the efforts of the opposition coalition as well as discouraging countries that want to support this force against President al-Assad's government./.
