Israel confirms Syria's chemical weapons stockpile is safe

A senior Israeli official said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad still controls his chemical weapons arsenal and that the Hezbollah movement, an ally of Damascus, does not want to acquire them.

Speaking in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, Israeli Defense Ministry strategist Amos Gilad said that the Syrian president possesses huge quantities of chemical weapons, missiles and rockets.

"The good news is that it is under complete control (of the Syrian government). Hezbollah also does not want this type of weapon (chemical). They want weapons systems like rockets that can reach here (the city of Beersheba)," Gilad said.

Gilad's revelation came after another Israeli official said the country had struck a shipment of missiles from Syria to Hezbollah./.
