Few students choose to take the History and Geography graduation exams.

After 4 days, students registered to choose 2 graduation exam subjects. A survey at some high schools in Ho Chi Minh City showed that Chemistry, Physics, and Foreign Languages received many choices. The remaining three subjects including History, Geography, and Biology had few students registering for the exam.

Mr. Nguyen Van Van, principal of Merie Curie High School (District 3) said that out of 1,100 12th graders taking the graduation exam, 80% registered for the Foreign Language exam. History and Chemistry were the two subjects with the least number of choices. Of these, 57 students registered for History and 300 students registered for Chemistry.

“Foreign languages are the strength of city students. They are always invested in and taught from the beginning. It is understandable that students choose foreign languages as their subject,” said Mr. Van.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Cuc, principal of Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District) said that up to now, 57% of students chose English, more than 52% of students chose Chemistry and up to 62.7% of students chose Physics. Meanwhile, in social subjects, only 25 students chose History, accounting for about 2.4% and 30 students chose Geography, accounting for 2%.

Meanwhile, the leader of Luong The Vinh High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) said that for just two subjects, English and Physics, the school had more than 60% of students registered, Chemistry 40%, Biology 30%, and Geography and History only 2% of students chose to take the exam.

Of the 696 students of Nguyen Thai Binh High School (Tan Binh) taking the graduation exam, more than 60% chose Physics, followed by Foreign Languages (over 50%), Chemistry (nearly 40%), and Biology (12%). Only 72 students chose History, and 116 students chose Geography.

Meanwhile, at the Continuing Education Centers, foreign languages are not selected, but Chemistry, Physics, and Biology are still selected relatively highly. Specifically, in 428 candidates of the Continuing Education Center of Tan Phu district taking the 12th grade graduation exam, up to 53% of students chose Chemistry, 41% chose Physics, and 38% chose Biology. Although up to 193 students chose History (45%), 84 students chose Geography (about 19.6%), this is still a small number compared to other subjects.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Tan Binh District Continuing Education Center, said that according to the initial survey, although natural sciences still account for a higher percentage of 40% or more, History is also chosen by over 30% of students, which is a relatively positive number for this subject.

It is worth mentioning that at Hong Duc Private High School, out of more than 500 students, only 3 students chose to take the History exam; 27 students chose to take the Geography exam; the rest chose to take the Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Foreign Language exams. The school has 20 students studying block C but 17 students did not choose to take the History exam.

Meanwhile, at Nguyen Khuyen Private High School (Tan Binh District), among nearly 2,000 12th grade students taking the graduation exam, the percentage of students choosing some subjects is relatively high, such as Physics with more than 40%, Chemistry and English about 30%, History and Geography account for a low percentage.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Chuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the selection of graduation exam subjects is based on the aptitude and ability of each student based on their academic results in recent school years so that students can choose the most suitable exam subject.

However, in recent years, the number of students taking university entrance exams in Ho Chi Minh City has also tended towards natural sciences and foreign languages... partly because they have benefited from the Government's National Foreign Language Project for the past 10 years. At the same time, with investment from their parents since childhood, and a relatively good learning environment, choosing a foreign language is within their capabilities.

Ms. Cuc believes that choosing a graduation exam subject depends on ability, students will choose a subject that they feel they can get a high score in. The fact that social subjects are rarely chosen is not because students hate these subjects but because they feel they are not capable of getting high scores. For Gia Dinh High School, due to the differentiation of classes according to university entrance exam groups when students register for grade 10, including groups A, B, D, A1, it is understandable that students choose graduation exam subjects corresponding to university entrance exam subjects.
