At least 10 people died in a boat capsize off the coast of Italy

(Baonghean.vn) - On Wednesday, March 4, the Italian coast guard announced that a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of the Strait of Sicily, killing at least 10 people.

On Wednesday, the Italian coast guard received an emergency signal from a ship towing a Libyan oil rig. Shortly after, the coast guard quickly rescued 318 migrants in distress.

With the help of a tugboat, the coast guard rescued 121 more people and continued to patrol the area in the hope of finding other survivors.

In less than 24 hours, seven rescue operations were carried out by the Italian coast guard and 941 migrants were saved in the Strait of Sicily, which separates an Italian island from the North African coast.

Authorities said that among the survivors were more than 30 children and 50 women. One pregnant woman was taken to the hospital for examination. As of now, at least 10 people have died in the above ship capsize.

It is known that in January and February 2015 alone, the Italian Ministry of the Interior said that there were 7,882 illegal immigrants coming to the country, an increase of more than 43% compared to the first two months of 2014.
