Previously, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo confirmed that Ugandan rebels from the Democratic Alliance Forces group carried out an attack also in Beni between October 5 and 8, killing 15 people.
Violence has continued to rage in eastern Congo in recent times, despite the presence of UN peacekeepers and the defeat of the M23 rebel group by Congolese government troops late last year.
The M23 rebels, originally a Tutsi army, merged into the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2009 but split three years later due to disagreements over pay and living conditions. To protest the government, M23 members regularly massacre civilians, rape women and recruit children.
The M23 attacks not only took place in the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo but also involved rebel groups in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the Great Lakes region and forcing 2.6 million people to lose their homes and 6.4 million people to live in a state of lack of essential goods./.
