Vietnamese Judo wins historic medal
“Southeast Asian Judo Queen” Van Ngoc Tu brought home the first medal for Vietnamese Judo at the 2011 Asian Judo Championship.
Yesterday (April 5), the 2011 Asian Judo Championship opened in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). “Southeast Asian Judo Queen” Van Ngoc Tu brought home the first medal for Vietnamese Judo at the continental arena.

Competing in the under-48kg category, Ngoc Tu defeated ippon Dewinda Ariani Trisna (Indonesia) in the first match. Then, Tu lost to Endo Hiromi (Japan) in the second match. In the bronze medal play-off round, Ngoc Tu fought tenaciously to finally win the overall victory over Indian fighter Devi Khumujarn Tombi. In the direct bronze medal match, Ngoc Tu excellently defeated fighter Alexandra Podryarova (Kazakstan) to bring home the first medal for Vietnamese Judo in the continental arena.
This year's tournament has a total of 210 athletes from 30 countries and territories in Asia. In addition to the 14 familiar weight categories that have been held in previous tournaments, this year's tournament also features men's and women's team events. Vietnam Judo is participating with 8 athletes (including 3 men). Previously, Vietnam Judo won silver and bronze medals at the continental level but only in the youth tournament system. The tournament will close on April 7.
