Juventus win hard as Ronaldo makes Serie A debut

Vinh San August 19, 2018 06:47

The defending champions had to come from behind to win 3-2 against Chievo in the opening round of the 2018-2019 season on the evening of August 18.

Juventus' trip to Chievo is of great interest as it is Cristiano Ronaldo's Serie A debut. The Portuguese star plays as a centre-forward in a 4-2-3-1 formation, supported by Paulo Dybala, Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado.

However, this was an unimpressive match for Juventus's attack. Their first two goals were both from set pieces. Sami Khedira opened the scoring early with a rebound in a messy situation after Miralem Pjanic's free kick.

Joao Cancelo had a chance to double the lead just minutes later when he ran in to meet Douglas Costa's cross. However, the former Inter player was hit by a Chievo defender, causing him to shoot wide. Ronaldo's first mark was when he quickly kicked the ball after Cuadrado's pass, sending it wide of the post.

Many predicted an easy win for Juventus and it looked like it would be after the first half. But Chievo came out strong. Mariusz Stepinski headed home an equaliser after Juventus's defence made a mistake in marking. With just 20% possession, Chievo scored with their first shot on target.

Ronaldo played hard and tried to make many shots. However, he did not seem to have found the best connection with his new teammates. The 33-year-old striker often had to relieve himself with long-range shots or shots with a very low chance of scoring.

Chievo took a surprise lead early in the second half. Cancelo fouled Emanuele Giaccherini, conceding a penalty to Juventus. Giaccherini scored the penalty from the spot, and Chievo were 13 minutes away from a historic victory when Mattia Bani scored an own goal from a corner kick. The goal lifted Juventus' spirits.

Mario Mandzukic put the ball in the Chievo net but after reviewing the video from VAR technology, the referee disallowed the goal because Ronaldo let the ball touch his hand. In this situation, the former Real striker collided with Stefano Sorrentino, forcing the Chievo goalkeeper to leave the field.

Sorrentino played quite well in this match. Unfortunately for Chievo, reserve goalkeeper Andrea Seculin could not continue his colleague's saves. In the third minute of injury time,Federico BernardeschiThe rock connected with a low cross from Alex Sandro.

Few expected Juventus to have such a difficult opening game after a summer of spending big on the market and bringing in quality new players. However, Max Allegri's team took all three points. Next week, Juventus will return home to take on Lazio.
