Kaspersky releases free antivirus software

Russian security company Kaspersky Lab has released a free version of its antivirus software in the United States. The company plans to make the same move available to users around the world over the next four months.

Called Kaspersky Free, the free antivirus software will provide essential basic security features, including email and desktop antivirus protection, quarantine of infected files, and automatic updates.

The free version lacks some advanced features, such as a virtual private network (VPN), parental controls, and extra security for online financial transactions. However, users can access these features by purchasing a full software license for $50 per device per year.

According to Kaspersky Lab, its free software has very little advertising, although users may have to provide personal data to the company in exchange for a "clean" interface.

The Russian security software company has been in headlines around the world recently, with articles rekindling suspicions about Kaspersky Lab’s ties to the Russian government. The company has flatly denied the allegations, but that hasn’t been enough to convince Washington to reinstate the company on its list of US-approved software makers.
