According to the investigation, Vien and Truong lived in the same Hoa Tan Dong commune, Dong Hoa district. They both worked at Hung's car wash in Ea Drang town (Dak Lak) so they were quite close.

Every time he returned to his hometown to visit his family, Vien noticed that Mr. Nguyen Gia Truyen (41 years old, owner of a jewelry store) often carried a box of gold and money on his motorbike from his house to the store in the center of Hoa Vinh town to do business quite carelessly.

Recently, due to debt and being urged by many people to pay, Vien invited Truong and Hung to plan a robbery. Their target was Mr. Truyen's gold shop.

To avoid detection, they bought a Sirius motorbike of unknown origin, attached a fake license plate, and then drove around every day to monitor all developments, activities, and gold transportation of Mr. Truyen.

After several days of surveillance, the group of robbers decided to commit the crime. The three men bought a homemade electric shock kit, pepper spray, and a plastic bottle filled with gasoline before committing the crime.

Late on August 18, Hung drove a car carrying two accomplices from Dak Lak, along National Highway 25 to Phu Yen, then went to the hospital to get a hidden motorbike.

The next morning, Vien and Truong drove a red and black Sirius, wearing jackets and covering their faces to avoid being recognized. Seeing Mr. Truyen and his mother carrying a box of gold and money to a shop in the center of Hoa Vinh town to do business, the two followed.

When they reached Le Loi Street, the two robbers approached and knocked over the gold shop owner's motorbike. They continued to spray pepper spray and electrocute Mr. Truyen, snatching the gold box and money with more than 3 billion VND.

After escaping, the two drove the car to a pine forest in Hoa Hiep Bac commune, where few people passed, and doused the car with gasoline and set it on fire. Hung then drove his car to pick them up.

"The robbers threw boxes and bags on the road; the money was put in a nylon bag and brought back to Hung's house to divide," said Colonel Luong Tan Dinh - Chief of Staff of Phu Yen Police, adding that Vien had given his wife some money to pay off the debt.

According to Colonel Dinh, after committing the crime, they split up and fled to different provinces and cities. Dozens of Phu Yen police, the Criminal Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) and police from many localities were deployed to search.

Searching the robbers' residence, police seized nearly 60 motorbike registration papers, more than 40 ID cards, 30 metal chains, 2 K59 guns, many other documents and two cars.
