The gunman who shot people in the fight at the cockfighting arena turned himself in.
Two days after a shooting at a cockfighting arena, police have detained seven people involved.
On the evening of May 1, after surrendering in Vinh Long, Nguyen Van Gam was transferred to Phu Tan District Police (Ca Mau) to investigate the act of shooting and seriously injuring Nguyen Vu Luan (24 years old) while gambling on cockfighting.
Six other people involved in the incident (five of whom are from Ca Mau and one from Vinh Long) were also detained by the police.
According to initial investigation, two days ago, Gam and 5 others rented a car from Vinh Long, carrying 3 fighting cocks and weapons to an empty lot in Rach Cheo commune (Phu Tan district) to organize cockfighting for money with Luan's group.
The two sides agreed to appoint Vo Van De (currently in custody) as referee for 3 cockfights, with a stake of 30-40 million VND. However, Luan's group "colluded" with the referee to oppress the opponent, forcing them to pay 40 million VND for the 3rd cockfight, even though their cock lost.
Dozens of people from the two groups attacked each other with weapons. During the fight, Gam pulled out a homemade gun and shot Luan in the left thigh, causing injury. He then restrained the people and demanded that a boat take him to Highway 1A, more than 10 km from the scene, to escape.
