Defendant Huynh Le Duy Viet was arrested for the crime of abuse of trust to appropriate property.
Initial investigation records show that due to his passion for gambling, Viet joined a football betting ring and lost many times.
To recoup his losses, from August 2012 to February 2013, Viet created 36 documents and payment orders, forging the signature of the Director of the Da Nang branch, Mr. Trieu Van Bao Quoc, to transfer money from the company account to personal accounts.
With 35 payment orders, Viet forged signatures and successfully transferred 5.75 billion VND into his personal account to pay for each lost bet.
In addition, there was a payment order of 90 million VND because Viet wrote the wrong name and account number, so the bank returned it to the branch.
Not only did he forge signatures to transfer money, Viet also embezzled nearly 59 million VND that the branch gave him to pay into the bank.
All the money Viet embezzled was spent on football betting.
The matter was exposed when in early 2013, Mr. Quoc asked Viet to report financial information, but Viet adjusted the customer debt balance to be many times higher than the actual amount and destroyed related documents to cover it up.
Seeing the unusual phenomenon, Mr. Quoc reported it to the Da Nang police.Initial investigation showed that the total amount of money Viet had embezzled was more than 5.8 billion VND.
The police are continuing to investigate.
