EURO 2024 results: England wins thrillingly over Switzerland; Netherlands deciphers Türkiye
In the last two quarter-final matches, both England and the Netherlands were behind but won in the end to meet each other in the semi-finals.
England beat Switzerland in a thrilling penalty shootout
The first 45 minutes were completely different from the two earlier quarter-final matches between Germany vs Spain and France vs Portugal, when the two teams delivered a rather boring half, without any shots on target. The most dangerous situation came in the final minute, when Kobbi Mainoo entered the penalty area to shoot after a pass from Bukayo Saka, but captain Granit Xhaka made a sure-fire save for Switzerland.
In the second half, the two teams did not make any personnel changes and of course the game did not have any breakthroughs. England was the team with the ball more, but it was Switzerland who created dangerous situations in front of Pickford's goal. Striker Breel Embolo made it extremely difficult for defender Konsa, as he continuously passed but his shots could not get past the Three Lions' final blocker.
However, the third time is the charm and on his third attempt in the match, Embolo left England fans speechless. In the 75th minute, after Ndoye's diagonal shot, the ball slightly touched Stones' foot and changed direction, making Pickford unable to block it and Embolo quickly rushed in to tap the ball into the empty net.
After conceding the goal, coach Southgate made three substitutions with the presence of Luke Shaw, Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze. Although the changes did not have an effect, the Three Lions quickly scored an equalizer in the 80th minute. Saka, after receiving a lot of criticism since the beginning of the tournament, showed his class, with a dribble and a shot from outside the penalty area that went straight into the far corner of Sommer's goal to equalize the score.

In the last 10 minutes of the match, both teams had chances to end the match but could not take advantage of them. The score remained tied until the end of the match and once again the quarter-final match had to go into extra time.
In the 30 minutes of extra time, Switzerland continued their solid play and blocked all the attacking stars of the Three Lions. Unable to score any more goals after 30 minutes of extra time, the two teams had to decide the match on penalties. The brilliance of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in blocking the first kick of centre-back Manuel Akanji, as well as the bravery of all 5 English players in successfully executing their kicks, helped England win 5-3 in the nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
Netherlands "decodes" Türkiye
After England defeated Switzerland in the penalty shootout, the focus of fans turned to the final quarter-final match of EURO 2024 between the Netherlands and Türkiye. With a rather liberal style of play, the Netherlands and Türkiye proved that their clash was the best match of the quarter-finals of this year's tournament.
The Netherlands pressed the pitch after the opening whistle but Türkiye played very proactively. They changed their stance very quickly and made it very difficult for the Netherlands to develop the ball.
When the Netherlands had chances but could not score, Türkiye had joy in the 35th minute. From the right wing, Arda Guler crossed very flexibly into the 16m50 box, thereby creating conditions for center-back Akaydin to head the ball close to the goal to open the score for Türkiye.
The first half ended with a score of 1-0 in favor of coach Vincenzo Montella's team. In the second half, the Netherlands immediately dominated and pressured their opponents.
The appearance of Wout Weghorst helped the Netherlands to be more proactive and have consecutive dangerous attacks. The tireless efforts of Ronaldo Koeman's students were rewarded in the 70th minute.
The equalizer was Stefan de Vrij from an unstoppable header after a quality pass from striker Depay. 1-1 for the "Orange Hurricane".

Excited after scoring against Türkiye, the Netherlands only needed 6 more minutes to score the second goal. Dumfries crossed from the right wing to Gakpo, who scored from close range, raising the score to 2-1 for the Netherlands. However, according to the organizers, this was counted as an own goal by Muldur, because the ball touched this player last before going into the net.
In the remaining time, Türkiye rose up to attack and created many dangerous opportunities, especially in the final minutes of the match. However, no more goals were scored and the match ended with a 2-1 victory for the Netherlands.
Thus, the Netherlands will face England in the semi-finals of EURO 2024 taking place at 02:00 on July 11.
