Opening of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China

On the morning of October 16, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the opening ceremony of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (20th Congress) took place.

Attending the ceremony were General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of China Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang, Chairman of the National People's Congress Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the National People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wang Yang, and many current and former leaders of the Party and State of China.

According to the agenda of the 20th Congress, delegates are expected to listen to and discuss the report of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, discuss the work report of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, discuss and adopt the amendment to the Constitution of the Communist Party of China, and elect the 20th Central Committee and the 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Attending the 20th Congress were a total of 2,296 delegates representing more than 96 million Party members and more than 4.9 million grassroots Party organizations of the Communist Party of China.

Held every five years, the National Congress of the Communist Party of China usually lasts about a week. The 20th Congress took place from October 16-22.

Delegates to the 20th Congress will elect the leadership of the Communist Party of China for the next five years.

The 20th National Congress is of utmost importance to China, as it embarks on a new journey of comprehensively building a modern socialist country. The next five years will be a key period for China to begin realizing this goal.
