Opening of the Central Coast Development Forum

On the morning of June 3, in Hoi An, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the World Bank and Quang Nam province organized the Forum on Sustainable Development in the Central Coastal Region.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; former Politburo member, former Standing member of the Secretariat Phan Dien, Chairman of the Central Region Disaster Prevention Support Fund; World Bank Country Director in Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa; Asian Development Bank Director in Vietnam Tomoyuki Kimura; leaders of central ministries, branches and localities in the region attended.

According to the general objective, the Central coastal region will be built into a dynamic, fast and sustainable development area, an important bridgehead of the whole country in international cooperation and exchange, maintaining political stability and social order and safety; developing the marine economy in association with ensuring national defense, security, and protecting sovereignty over seas and islands.

Over the past 10 years, the 9 provinces and cities participating in the Forum have received more than 2.5 billion USD from development partners. Currently, the programs and project portfolios being implemented in the area have a capital of about 1.83 billion USD.

Fundamentally improve people's lives, promote hunger eradication and poverty reduction, especially for ethnic minorities; strengthen protection and health care for people; minimize the impact of natural disasters (storms, floods, droughts), protect the ecological environment, and effectively respond to climate change.

To achieve the above goals, major solutions are needed in priority development areas such as completing infrastructure construction in key economic zones; constructing and renovating important irrigation works; developing urban areas and protecting the ecological environment; improving the quality of education and human resources; increasing investment from the State budget; and developing a transparent financial market.

Besides, there are solutions on mechanisms, policies; human resources; science and technology; administrative reform and solutions on enhancing cooperation and market development...

The forum has major topics: “Sustainable development of the Central Coast region: Opportunities and challenges”; “Enhancing transport infrastructure connectivity to serve sustainable socio-economic development of the region in the new context”; “Sustainable development of water resources associated with prevention and mitigation of natural disaster risks in the Central Coast region”.

The organizers hope that the Forum will be an opportunity for delegates to exchange experiences in resource mobilization, disaster risk management, sustainable water resource management as well as other forms of community linkage to promote potential, promote economic development, contribute to hunger eradication and poverty reduction...
