On September 23, the 32nd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and related conferences were solemnly opened in the capital Vientiane.

The opening ceremony was attended by Lao Prime Minister Thongsinh Thammavong and nearly 300 high-ranking delegates from ASEAN member countries, partner and dialogue countries, the ASEAN Secretariat, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IEA), the ASEAN Economic Research Institute and the East Asia Energy Center.

The Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Cao Quoc Hung attended the conference.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Thammavong affirmed that AMEM 32 is of special importance, being held in the context of climate change having seriously impacted the Earth, leading to a series of natural disasters and catastrophes such as earthquakes, storms, floods, droughts, etc., causing heavy losses in human lives and property.

This conference also takes place in the context of the ASEAN socio-economic development, the quality of life of the people is improving. Therefore, the demand for energy to ensure sustainable socio-economic development is very large.

The energy sector plays an important role in addressing climate change while ensuring sustainable economic development in the ASEAN region. Within the framework of cooperation and integration, the ASEAN energy sector has also exchanged experiences in saving and developing alternative energy effectively.

Prime Minister Thammavong emphasized that the Lao Government attaches importance to environmental protection, especially ensuring the richness and diversity of ecology and sustainable flora and fauna.

Laos has an effective policy to use natural resources, especially the river system, as a strength in hydropower development, but does not underestimate the possible impacts and impacts on the environment when exploiting this energy sector.
