Opening of the 2nd East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting
The Cambodian Foreign Minister highly appreciated the effectiveness of cooperation between ASEAN and its partners within the framework of the East Asia Summit recently.
On the morning of July 12, the 2nd East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting opened in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This is one of the most anticipated meetings among the activities taking place within the framework of the 45th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and related meetings.
The conference was attended by 10 ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Foreign Ministers of ASEAN Dialogue Partners in East Asia, including China, Japan, South Korea, the US, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and India.

In his opening speech at the Conference, Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Nam Hong highly appreciated the effectiveness of cooperation between ASEAN and its partners within the framework of the East Asia Summit in recent times, especially in promoting regional integration and connectivity, making an important contribution to socio-economic development, promoting security, peace and stability in East Asia and the world.
Minister Hor Nam Hong said: Since the establishment of the East Asia Summit mechanism in Kuala Lumpur in December 2005, we have witnessed significant progress in regional cooperation between ASEAN and its partners in East Asia in all key areas such as energy, education, finance, etc. Last year in particular, the East Asia Summit leaders approved the ASEAN Connectivity Plan as the focus for connectivity cooperation efforts across East Asia.
The Foreign Ministers of the East Asia Summit focused on assessing and reviewing the future development trends of regional cooperation within the framework of the East Asia Summit in recent times and discussed preparations for the 7th East Asia Summit to be held in November 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In addition, the Foreign Ministers also discussed and exchanged views on regional and international issues that have received public attention in recent times, such as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and issues related to the East Sea./.
