Opening of the 11th Asia Security Summit

On the evening of June 1, the 11th Asia Security Summit (also known as the Shangri-La Defense Dialogue) opened in Singapore with the participation of many defense ministers, senior defense officials and scholars in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year's conference was attended by representatives from 28 Asia-Pacific countries along with officials from the UK, France, Russia and the US.

Topics of discussion at the three-day conference include military modernization programs, global balance of power, regional security architecture, countering transnational threats, and responding to natural disasters.

Among these, the East Sea issue will also be mentioned. In addition to multilateral dialogue, the Shangri La Dialogue is also an opportunity for senior defense officials of the countries to hold bilateral meetings.

Speaking at the opening session, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono emphasized that the geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific region has changed a lot, relations between countries and regions are increasingly strengthened, the path of cooperation for each country is wide open, but challenges and security issues still exist in the region.

According to him, Asia needs to seize strategic opportunities to build a sustainable peace structure through joint efforts to open up new geopolitical cooperation.

The US delegation attending this conference is led by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. According to the plan, on June 2, Mr. Panetta will give a speech on US strategy in the Asia-Pacific./.
