Opening of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) expert-level conference in Iran

On August 26, the 16th Expert Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) opened in Tehran, Iran, which will officially take over the NAM chairmanship from Egypt and assume this position for the next three years.

The conference attracted representatives of more than 100 countries to discuss the latest challenges facing the world.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi affirmed that during his term as NAM Chairman, Iran will promote the goal of strengthening solidarity among member countries to turn NAM into an effective bloc, while enhancing NAM's active role in destroying weapons of mass destruction.

According to Mr. Salehi, any outside interference in regional issues is "unacceptable" and that the Palestinian issue should be seriously discussed at this conference.

He asserted that it was necessary to return Palestinians to "occupied lands" so that the Palestinian people could decide their own fate. In addition, Iran's top diplomat also stressed the need to consider "Israeli hostility" as the biggest threat in the region.

Regarding Iran's nuclear program, Foreign Minister Salehi affirmed that current unilateral sanctions are against the United Nations Charter.

Iran is currently under great pressure from economic and diplomatic sanctions from the US and the European Union (EU) to force the country to stop its uranium enrichment programs.

As planned, the NAM Expert Conference will take place from August 26 to 29 to prepare the contents for the Conference.summittook place on August 30 and 31.

Established in Belgrade in 1961, NAM currently has 120 countries, accounting for two-thirds of the United Nations members and about 55% of the world's population./.
