Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Vietnam Summer Camp "My Homeland's Seas and Islands"

With the theme "My Homeland's Seas and Islands," on the evening of July 11th, in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, nearly 170 delegates, consisting of young Vietnamese expatriates with outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to community building movements in their host countries, attended the opening ceremony of the Vietnam Summer Camp 2014.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, Nguyen Thanh Son, stated that the Vietnam Summer Camp 2014 is an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese youth to access and gain a deeper understanding of the issue of national sovereignty over the sea and islands, the patriotic traditions, cultural roots, and the spirit of solidarity of the 54 ethnic groups; thereby enhancing the pride and love for their homeland among young overseas Vietnamese.

In Quang Ninh, delegates visited the World Natural Heritage site of Ha Long Bay. Particularly during the opening ceremony, delegates interacted with youth union members from Quang Ninh province; they sang songs expressing their love for their homeland and praising the land and people of Quang Ninh. Following the opening ceremony, a bonfire and various games organized by the Quang Ninh Youth Union strengthened the bonds between young Vietnamese expatriates and young people from Quang Ninh.

Nguyen Nam Khanh, returning from the Czech Republic, said: "This trip back to Vietnam made me very happy and excited to visit Ha Long Bay, to see the people who work day and night at sea, and to better understand the tradition of nation-building and national defense of our people. When I return to the Czech Republic, I will tell my friends about my people so they can learn more about our beloved homeland, Vietnam."

The 2014 "Homeland's Seas and Islands" Summer Camp aims to support nationwide activities for the sacred sovereignty of the seas and islands and to celebrate major national holidays. The Vietnam Summer Camp 2014 journey takes place from July 8th to 27th, with many meaningful activities in various locations across the three regions of Vietnam.
